OATLEY RSL YOUTH CLUB INC. PRESIDENT’S ANNUAL REPORT 2013

Date: 28th March 2014

It’s been 11 months since I became President of the Youth Club and I’ve had the pleasure of working with a very helpful and passionate professional group of people that make up our committee. Kim Wagstaff, Jim Hamilton, Duane Yates, Leisha Emmanouilidis, Janelle Bulmer, Robyn Ellis, Peter Jones, Tina Graham, Lyn Johnston, Sue Liu, Cathy Mercer and James Moore are all owed many thanks for their great support throughout the year keeping the overall management of the Club running smoothly.

It’s with great pleasure that I can report that this has been another impressive year for the Youth Club. We have offered activities to the youth of the district in three divisions: Gymsports, Netball and Football and have over 1,000 members, a 10% increase on last year.

Gymsports had over 320 children attending classes across a wide range of activities over six days a week. Gymnastics was able to add weekday Kindergym classes in 2013 with 2 classes on a Wednesday morning. A new air tumble mat was purchased, and some older matting replaced. 60 gymnasts represented the club at Regional and State competitions, with Aerobic Gymnastics represented at Nationals in Brisbane. The Gymsports display on 1st December was a great success, at Revesby Workers club for the first time. Each class performed a choreographed item to music and used a variety of gymnastic equipment.

Netball consisted of 13 teams in 2013 with 6 playing in seniors and 7 in juniors. Oatley Pearl were Premiers in Division S5 while Oatley Jade were Runners Up in Division S6. Oatley Coral won the St George President’s Encouragement Award given to the junior team while coaches Siobhan Kenna and Jacqualyn Bresnahan won the St George Don Rowland Coaching Trophy. Melissa Nicholson won the St George Spirit of Umpiring Award and Jessica Mok received an encouragement award from St George. A successful movie night and a disco were held for the junior players and our year culminated with our presentation afternoon to all players.

This year, soccer had 650 players registered. This is a significant increase from 528 last year. This included 9 U6 teams,  and 2 over 35 teams so in many cases we have whole families playing. On the field our newly promoted Premier League team just missed the semis,  a creditable performance. Our 10 Girls and U18a minor Premiers and Premiers. U15B won the Grand Final. U16 Girls and All Age Women B teams won every game, except for the grand final. Off the field, the club invested heavily in new equipment to provide a better playing experience for everyone.

The Youth Club participated well at the local Oatley ANZAC Day commemoration with a good roll up and several young members delivering the readings.

We again awarded Youth Club major trophies. These awards promote the culture and ethics of the Youth Club movement among the members. There is certainly a great crop of young people in the Club who are enjoying their sports and who will grow to be responsible citizens and future community leaders. The trophies awarded were:

Clearly the activities of the Youth Club take a huge amount of organisation. Over 200 parents, friends and members themselves are involved in running the activities and I would like to thank all of these people for their generous contribution of time, hard work and emotional support that has made the year a good one.

I would also like to mention some particular acknowledgements:

Many thanks for their generous support, encouragement and assistance go to the Oatley RSL Sub Branch. I'd also like to acknowledge the RSL & Community Club for their support during the year hosting meetings and a range of youth club functions.

And finally thanks to the many local business sponsors whose generous support we greatly appreciate, to parents for attending and supporting kids throughout the year, and especially to the Youth members who have played the game in the right spirit not only competing well but respecting opponents and having fun at the same time.

We look forward to a great year in 2014.
